The Savage Beauty Skull is a lenticular artwork by Gary James McQueen.
McQueen is a British artist with intriguing connections to the fashion world.
Gary was first introduced to the fashion industry in 2005 by his late uncle, Alexander McQueen. After that, he was employed as head textile designer for the McQueen Ready-To-Wear Menswear. He was given free rein to explore a number of niche skills. Most importantly, using a 3D canvas to create optical-illusion textile design.
Forging a unique partnership with his uncle, Gary was trusted with the delivery of many personal projects. For example, art pieces such as the Gold Skull artwork. This piece would become the iconic case for the V&A’s “Savage Beauty” Exhibition (2015). This exhibition commemorated Alexander McQueen’s life work.
Vogue, The Guardian, The Independent (and many more) reviewed the exhibition:
For every heaven-sent gown come half a dozen that seem to have risen straight up from the underworld.
With the V&A announcing record breaking sales, it is undoubtedly the hottest ticket in town.
Go and see the Savage Beauty exhibition. It is a must.
In 2018, McQueen combined the familial inheritance of his uncle with his own artistic integrity. He explored his natural skill for visual story telling. The following works clearly show, here is a creative practitioner with an accomplished and powerful aesthetic.
